Icon Pack Studio is a neat icon mask maker with a bad name

Smart Launcher makes one hell of a launcher, and it just stepped up its theming game in a big, big way. Smart Launcher released Icon Pack Studio last week, giving ordinary users with zero experience the ability to create icon masks that will evenly and beautifully apply to all of the apps on their home screen and app drawer. Even better, the way Smart Launcher made this move lets its victory come to other launchers as well, giving users a win and giving Smart Launcher a new way to try…

Fixing Play Music: How Google can improve its streaming music service

How can Google Play Music improve? Let us count the ways… I’m not exaggerating when I say this: Google Play Music is the first app I use every morning and it is the last thing I see before I put my phone to sleep at night. And no, that’s not just because Google Play Music is my alarm clock. Music is what keeps me sane during chaotic work days, and it’s what cheers me up when life inevitably happens. Google Play Music always has been my most-used app, and it’s…

Want the best Galaxy icons on your S8? Try these icon packs!

The icons on the Galaxy S8 are unique… and really mismatched. The squircle icons with the incomplete wireframe logos are very interesting, and there is a very real appeal to that look… but it doesn’t cover all of the apps that come on the Samsung Galaxy S8 — it doesn’t even cover all the Samsung apps on the Galaxy S8 — and it covers none of the apps that come from Google Play or Samsung Apps. That’s a bummer, but never fear! Icon packs are here, and just as icon…

The Samsung Chromebook Plus has been around for a while, having been announced at CES and released shortly after. How to make a custom icon for Android

Theming icons with a pack is pretty awesome. But they can’t do everything. Icon packs have holes. Icon packs sometimes miss. All you need is some kind of photo editor — be it the latest Photoshop or free cloud-based editors like Pixlr — and a little creativity. Finding your image Most customization-oriented launchers like…

Google Photos launches physical Google Photo Books

Photo books can be a big pain to make. You have to hunt through hundreds or thousands of photos in order to find the ones you want, have to judge which ones are really in focus and which ones are awkward, then you have to arrange them on the pages and come up with captions. Then you have to upload everything to a photo service, hope they don’t get out of order, and pay and arm and a leg for them. No more. Google Photos wants to make photo books…

Google collects AI-based services across the company into Google.ai

One of the early announcements out of Google I/O 2017’s keynote was the launch of google.ai, with which Google aims to “bring the benefits of AI to everyone”. Google.ai is a collection of products and teams across Alphabet with a focus on AI. There are several projects under Google.ai underway already, including using neural nets to build better neural nets and a particularly exciting project that looks to bring AI detection to healthcare. Google has worked with pathologists to build neural nets that can detect spreading cancer in lymph nodes…

Netflix no longer works on rooted or bootloader-unlocked Android phones

Wanted to go for a binge on your rooted Android phone? I’ve got some bad news. Rooted users started noticing the app gone from Google Play on their devices over the weekend, and Netflix eventually confirmed it did this intentionally. The streaming service is now using Google’s Wildvine DRM to block the app from rooted devices that don’t pass Wildvine’s security status, and its Google Play listing will not appear for devices that fail a SafetyNet check, which not only rules out rooted phones but also unrooted phones that are…
