Android Central Podcast: Winning the Title II

This week, your hosts Daniel Bader, Jerry Hildenbrand and Andrew Martonik talk about what’s new in the world of smartphones, and the regulators that influence the carriers we pay to get cellular service for those phones. Andrew gives his thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S8, and the team talk about whether the new phone is a foundational phone that has problems — more like the Galaxy S6 than the Galaxy S7. The BlackBerry KEYone is coming soon, but who is this phone for, and should you care? Daniel and Jerry…

Flames' Matthew Tkachuk earns hearing for elbowing Drew Doughty (Video)

Yahoo Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames will have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety after his high elbow to the face of Drew Doughty late in the first period of Sunday’s game. Health Care and ‘The Virtue of Selfishness’

X Story Stream recent articles WASHINGTON — “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.” The novelist Anatole France’s mischievous observation came to mind when the Congressional Budget Office released its analysis of the Republican cut-taxes/gut-Medicaid bill and its defenders went into a continuous loop talking about “freedom.” Conservatives are fond of saying that freedom isn’t free. This is entirely true, especially when it comes to health care. Republicans speak of…

[Review] The atom, the molecule, and the covalent organic framework

Just over a century ago, Lewis published his seminal work on what became known as the covalent bond, which has since occupied a central role in the theory of making organic molecules. With the advent of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the chemistry of the covalent bond was extended to two- and three-dimensional frameworks. Here, organic molecules are linked by covalent bonds to yield crystalline, porous COFs from light elements (boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and silicon) that are characterized by high architectural and chemical robustness. This discovery paved the way for…

[Perspective] Membrane proteins scrambling through a folding landscape

Single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) (1) measures the extension of a molecule when subjected to force. The folding of a protein can be explored by pulling on one terminus to unfold it; upon relaxation, it may refold toward its native states (2, 3). Transmembrane proteins typically unfold stepwise as structural segments (which can consist of parts of single or multiple secondary structures) are extracted from the membrane (see the figure, top panel) (4). Once extracted, the unfolded segment can insert back into the membrane and fold toward the native protein structure…
